According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the Bush-era tax cuts and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq make up nearly half of projected public debt. Another significant chunk is due to the economic downturn.
Notice that things like Medicare and other welfare programs don’t comprise a significant portion of the debt. Drastically cutting non-defense discretionary spending will hardly even make a dent. If you’re actually serious about balancing the budget, you have to cut defense spending and end the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.
Romney’s plan to balance the budget by cutting Medicare and killing Big Bird while drastically increasing defense spending and doubling down on tax cuts for the wealthy demonstrates that he’s delusional, stupid, or a liar. You can cut non-defense spending to nothing and you still won’t achieve a balanced budget.
